More than a quarter of those living in England don’t even know who their patron saint is, and even fewer know St George – a Turkish-born Roman soldier – is also the patron saint of Aragon, Catalonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Palestine and Portugal, not to mention soldiers, archers, cavalry and chivalry, farmers, field workers, riders and saddlers, and those suffering from leprosy, plague and syphilis!
